A conversational seminar series exploring the future of creative art and design education in digital spaces.

Digital spaces and practices are evident in almost all creative and learning journeys. This is reflected in students’ experience of Higher Education and in the Creative Industries’ increasing emphasis on online collaboration.

However, fully online creative education remains difficult to imagine as it appears to contradict key characteristics inherent in ‘residential’ provision in various ways.

In conversation with experts, we will explore the challenges and opportunities for fully online and digital creative education, the implications for the identity of our subjects and institutions.

Seminar themes

The ‘desituating’ of material practices, embodiment and notions of co-presence.
An assumed lack of ‘togetherness’ and group cohesion through increased flexibility of provision.
The extent to which online provision amplifies and reflects current tensions around access, scale, and creativity
Which aspects of subject tradition that should be questioned or protected in the attempt to be more inclusive

17 May - Decentering Digital with Natasha Bonnelame (Programme Director Digital Learning at London College of Fashion, UAL)

There is a compelling narrative about digital platforms and their potential to decentre modes of learning and knowledge systems. The langue we use to describe these spaces, atmospheric and structureless, belies a history of taxonomy and information management steeped in European ideals concerning knowledge. Yet, the compulsion remains and there is value us considering how we might navigate these spaces and the potential to craft and re-engineering our approaches to learning and knowledge exchange across digital platforms.

7 June - The Online Crit with Paul Lowe (Professor of Conflict Peace and the Image at London College of Communication, UAL)

The crit is a mainstay of 'Art School' pedagogy and often central to students' creative journeys. In this session Professor Paul Lowe will explore the affordances of the online crit, how it can extend the traditions of the face-to-face crit and where it must go beyond current practice.

21 June - Case Study: MA Illustration at Falmouth University with Barnaby Lickens-Richards (Course Leader) and Sara Feio (Online Tutor and Alumni)

A discussion of Falmouth’s fully online illustration MA, exploring how the design of the course supports creative practice and a sense of belonging. The conversation will give insight into how illustration can be taught ‘at scale’ in the online environment.

5 July - Navigating the Future: Exploring AI Literacy in Creative Education with Mary Jacob (PGCTHE Coordinator, Lecturer in Learning & Teaching at Aberystwyth Uni)

We will delve into how artificial intelligence tools can transform ways of teaching and enhance creativity in educational settings.

13 September - Teaching the tangible, remotely: Fashion as material culture with Maria Constantino (Lecturer in Cultural and Historical Studies (LCF)

Maria will discuss the challenges and potential of adapting object-based learning (OBL) to online formats, focusing on student engagement and the translation of hands-on experiences into digital interactions.

4 October -Presence and Belonging in Creative Education with Vikki Hill ( Senior Lecturer in Learning Enhancement and Academic Development at Queen Margaret University's LEAD Centre) and Liz Bunting (Educational Developer Academic Enhancement in Teaching, Learning and Employability Exchange)

Liz and Vikki reflect on a strand of educational development work that aims to foster belonging and develop compassionate pedagogies.

They also explore some of the 'myths' around belonging and consider the implications for educators in planning and delivering the curriculum.

18 October at 3pm GMT- Anti-oppressive pedagogies in online learning with María Miguéliz Valcarlos (Graduate Research Assistant, University of South Florida)

Maria will discuss the implementation of anti-oppressive pedagogies in online classrooms, highlighting educators' efforts to encourage reflection, promote critical awareness, and equalize roles.
