A yearly art exhibition by UAL students from across the world, exploring the theme of language.

The Language-Art Project aims to gather diverse groups of students from across UAL to create a variety of language-themed art.

You can interpret the brief in any way you wish and with any medium. You can work collaboratively or solo. All you need is curiosity and enthusiasm.

Join the Language-Art Project to:

  • Meet students from other courses and nationalities.
  • Take part in a cross-cultural artistic collaboration.
  • Contribute to an online exhibition in the summer term.

Who is it for?

All UAL students are welcome. Students come together from a range of courses, disciplines, nationalities and language backgrounds.

How to join

If you would like to join the 2025 Language-Art Project, please check this page in January. We will post further information then.

Exhibition themes for 2024

Browse our selection of galleries to explore the work and the artists.

  • abstract painting of a tree with characters in the branches
Shuhan (Linda) Wang, 2024 BA Games Art, London College of Communication, UAL

Legends and Histories, Old and New

What is the relationship between language and history, legend, myth, cultural legacy? Does language shape the narrative… or is it shaped by the narrative?

  • clear id card with abstract or aline characters in the identification fields
Fatima Hussain, 2024 BA Design for Art Direction, London College of Communication, UAL

    Shaping and Reshaping

Through letters, characters, words and symbols, the permutations are endless. In combining, separating, layering, dismantling and mixing, we can express every facet of existence.

  • abstract painting of minimalist red lines in a shape of a house on a black background
Oriana Anthony, 2024 BA Fine Art Painting, Camberwell College of Arts, UAL

What it Means to be Human … or Not Human

Is language more than a mere neurological and physical function: something deeply connected with our deepest ‘self’, our very essence? What does AI bring to the mix?

  • picture of collages in an old book
Yansi Lian, 2024 BA Fine Art, Central Saint Martins, UAL

    Disconnection and Disorientation

When context is removed, or when communication breaks down, our minds desperately scramble to find meaning in the chaos. And if meaning remains elusive, new interpretations arise.
