This website is run by by the Research team at University of the Arts London (UAL). This accessibility statement applies to UAL Staff Researchers. Other websites and browser based systems on the arts.ac.uk domain have their own accessibility statements.
This website uses HTML 5 (HyperText Mark-up Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to render content. We have also used other technologies including JavaScript on certain areas of the website.
We commit to ensuring this website is as accessible as possible and we want as many people as possible to be able to use it. This means that you should be able to:
- access the website regardless of the device and browser you are using
- zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).
We have also tried to make the website text as easy to understand as possible although we recognise we have more work to do on this.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We want to have the best possible experience on this website but we know that some parts of the website are not fully accessible:
- some third party content is known not be accessible

Technical information about this website's accessibility
UAL is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
1. The Discovery Module only partially supports WCAG criteria 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context) (Level A).
There has been a problem identified with a third party product integration, specifically, Dimensions badges. In particular, the link name is not descriptive enough. Moreover, on iOS devices, it is read incorrectly in three parts. The problem has been reported and the Dimensions team are working to resolve it.
2. The Discovery Module only partially supports WCAG criteria 4.1.1 Parsing (Level A)
Valid HTML/CSS is always produced when the application is developed; the development environment is configured to ensure this. However, there is at present a duplicate ID problem with an external product integration (specifically, an Altmetric badge). The problem has been reported and the Altmetric team are working to resolve it.
3. The Discovery Module only partially supports WCAG criteria 1.4.10 Reflow (Leval AA)
The website does support zooming to 400% through the use of responsive design and a dedicated mobile (320 pixel wide) view. However, the full range of functionality is not yet available as we do not yet support the use of filters in this mode. We are working towards introducing this in an upcoming release.
Users visiting the site via a desktop device can have use of the full feature set up to a 200% zoom.
What we're doing to improve accessibility
We use a third party solution called Elements which is provided by Sympletic. We will continue to lobby them to make the improvements to the accessibility of their product.
