Life at Wimbledon College of Arts
[MUSIC PLAYING]
Because it's a specialist performance art college, it just inspires me to work harder because I see everybody else's work and see people doing something completely different to me, like acting, and just seeing them doing their thing and trying to create their art. It makes me want to make something.
You're meeting so many different types of people that you end up just creating this almost mini theatre company of people who have all these different skills that can help you with your art.
There is so much course collaboration, because even the courses themselves, there are so many skills that cross over between them.
I'm so appreciate that our college can give us such a huge stage to show our design, show our performance.
Wimbledon gives me the time and the space and the care to really nurture my artistic voice. I'm just happy because I can just perform.
We have the central loan store, and whatever project we want to create, we can rent out equipment from them.
Cameras, tripods, lights, anything that we need, really.
And we also have a green screen.
One that's very integral to my own practise is the sound studio.
I personally love using the dye lab. All the technicians are super nice and helpful.
To be able to just go and sit in the library and just kind of pore over books and things like that, and just sit in silence when all I've been thinking about is music and lights and costume and drama.
My favourite thing about Wimbledon is in summertime, when the weather's really, really nice and you've just finished rehearsals, there's a little park just across the way. And we all are so tired we end up just falling on the grass and just talking. And there's music playing, all, just sharing food. Like, it's just this beautiful summertime student vibe that I just love.
I enjoy going to charity shops near Wimbledon Common, and it's a place where we usually source a lot of costumes for our shows.
The most fun part of Wimbledon, that you can never know what will wait behind the door and what crazy projects is someone making.
It's very exciting. Like, you feel like you're walking around in a performance, in a way.
I really respect my tutors as people and individuals. Like, they have loads of knowledge and they genuinely just want us to do the best that we can do.
They're always going to be the first people to push you that extra mile, when it comes to devising or performing. Like, they are your first port of call and super, super supportive.
They treat you as professionals, and they really try to bring the best out of you, try to understand you as an artist.
My interaction with the technician is everything. I will ask them every small question I have.
One thing about Wimbledon is that they are so welcoming of different cultures and backgrounds. A lot of my friends aren't from the UK, which is really nice to have different cultures kind of come into my own art.
I find a way to combine my Moroccan heritage into every project, even in the Shakespeare one.
What sort of person can come to Wimbledon to study? I think, it's for all kind of person. Yeah, if you are shy, that doesn't matter. The tutor and your friend will help you. They encourage me a lot.
The whole reason I was scared to go to uni was because I was scared I wasn't-- I wouldn't find people but I get on with. It was so worth coming because of the people I've met and the friends I've made. I've met people that I'm just going to be with the rest of my life, and it's really nice.
It's mind blowing how great everyone is in Wimbledon, from technicians, students, teachers. Our estates, our canteen, our everyone, we all know each other and we all appreciate each other. We say "hello" every day. We say "goodbye" when we leave. Everyone is incredible. It's the best thing about Wimbledon.
You're going to have friends for a lifetime. Like, the people I've met here-- amazing, stunning, beautiful. I love them.
